Difference between keyword & keyword phrase?

Based on my current experience then keyword tend to be pretty general. While keyword phrase comprises of the main keyword and other components, which can create long and details keywords. The longer keywords are, the more details they will be and it will be easier to make plan with those keywords, rather than planning seo with a general keyword since it will be extremely hard to compete.
