Yes, you have to be very careful how you build links now. Optimized keywords in anchor text with a dofollow link is no longer the smart way to go. If you do this on a mass scale you will be deindexed without warning. I'm already seeing it. Use only branded anchor text, and vary with or without .com (.net.biz. or whatever) to give you anchor text variation. Also, start building nofollows too, or else you are putting yourself in a bad position...

I still cling on the idea of "diversifying" link profiles.
for me, a good mixture of links would be like this:
* 20% url only (
www.abcdef.com)
* 20% brand (
abcdef or
abcdef.com)
* 20% long tail (the best thing about
abcdef)
* 20% relevant (
alphabet)
* 20% others

So far, which sites have irrelevant number of do-follow or no-follow links (unbalanced ratio) are getting red-flagged. Preferably one should keep a realistic ratio between them. I will personally recommend no-follow to do-follow ratio should be 2:1.

Yeah, its pretty disturbing in the eyes of Google to see all the links are do-follow and there's no good percentage of nofollow. I keep a good ratio of dofollow-nofollow links too
