I have some friend's sites which have grown over past few years to be pretty good and great. So, I thought if I get some links from them will it be helpful? They are from related niches.

I think i am Little bit counfused with your question but how much i am getting your question not all web 2.0 sites will be bad there are some good web 2.0 sites which pass unique backlink

They are not bad. Its just that they are free so many people use them to spam.

I agree. People spam so they are considered as weak links but that doesn't mean they all are weak.
