I got 12 backlinks in one day, will I be penalized? Its just that we published an article and then republished it in an paid directory. And it got 12 backlinks in one day, does it look suspicious to google somehow?

Judge the merit of links first. Check their sources, their anchor texts, pages they are referred from etc. If they are from irrelevant then get rid of them. You are not going to get penalized just because you acquired 12 links in one day.
