Exactly correct. So if you wanna rank than you have to treat them as such and create separate link profiles.

Sub domains are treated as separate entities in my opinion. Because they are usually smaller in size, authority and basically a total different entity.

Search engines consider sub-domain as a separate domain that is why subdomains are created to optimize the websites separately for each of those regions.
