Its really simple and yet hard. You might think the statement a bit confusing right?
We keep track through blogs and forum discussion. If we face a problem we pass it on to the community and see how they react & overcome it. Keeping track of the latest SEO trends isn't that hard but dealing with them is hard.
We run tests varying various elements every day. In order to rank and get traffic you need to evolve too.

I also agree with you here. SEO is involved in aspect of life. For promoting or branding a website SEO is a must.

It is a must for all of the practitioners of SEO that their process of optimization must improve from time to time to combat the competition as well as to cope up with the target users.
