Understanding backlinks and how they might impact local traffic

I've been working on trying to build links back to my website to improve the SEO ranking. I do local business and sometimes when I'm getting some of these backlinks, they seem to generate more traffic internationally and I'm wondering if that mattters. The backlink itself helps with the ranking, but do backlinks connect different types of traffic based on how they reach a certain location and if that's true, do links that tie to international communities actually create the wrong kind of traffic?
