If I am targeting a specific keyword in a forum to get traffic. How should do it?

Try linking the keyword from high authority page. Getting a forum link ranked is hard so get as much good quality links you can.

Only linking is not going to help you have to optimize the page according to SEO also.

You can also try promoting the keyword page through social channels. They may not help to get it ranked but surely they will bring traffic to your site.
