No, you cannot rank without backlinks. You can attempt to rank without doing any link building and if your content is good enough, you may be able to acquire backlinks naturally from readers who enjoyed your content and recommended them to others. However, even in those cases, you're still relying on backlinks to rank your website - the only difference is that you're not actively building them.

Absolutely correct.
And getting links naturally works. But it may take years to get their. So, its not a practical strategy.

No content can be ranked without any backlinks. However, one can use inorganic methods like PPC, SMM, SEM, Adwords, to get the ranking without any efforts on backlinking.

These methods are for traffic not ranking.

PPC, SMO are for direct traffic. They can't get you real ranking.

Ranking here is a relative term. But yeah with money people can get as much as traffic they want.

Yes its more important to create back link if you want to rank higher in search result pages so you cannot rank without links
