I completely agree. If you want exposure and some good referral traffic than its good but otherwise you are just spamming the forum.

Well yes its true that forums mostly give no follow links. But yes this also true that chances are more that you will traffic.

Forum links do not effect ranking for your website. Most forums offer no follow backlinks which are helpful to build traffic for your website.

As per my experience forum signature, links used to be a great source of backlink building. I had a lot of forums I posted on and adding my signature to those links would increase a site's ranking considerably.

Do follow Forums are very helpful to get high PR backlinks and as far as i know forums with do follow are the best backlink providers and increase the ranking of the page.
