Creating content totally out of the box is one option. If you can do it then it is nothing to worry. But now-a-days webmasters have developed some techniques to get listed on those high authority sites such as Haro. Haro basically is a help zone for reporters. If any reporter has any query then they post it there and if you can reply them well by being a 'source' then you can get featured in high authority sites (from which the reporter belong eg. cnn or bbc world news etc).
