Before you can come up with a list of keywords and terms, you need to know what
topics you will cover or which niches and categories your website or article will fall into. You should know what audience you are marketing your website towards and your topics should interest or be relevant to that audience. E.g. If you were going to discuss your website with a person, what words would you use? These words become your buckets and you will fill your buckets with keywords.

Understand Your Audience Personas
Start by identifying who your ideal customers are. What problems do they have? What words do they use when searching? Build personas based on demographics, interests, and search behavior to guide keyword selection.

Use Keyword Tools to Explore Opportunities
Leverage tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ubersuggest, or Ahrefs to find relevant keywords. Look for terms with solid search volume, low-to-moderate competition, and user intent that matches your offer.

Analyze Competitor Keywords
Spy on what your competitors rank for. Tools like SEMrush or SpyFu can uncover keywords bringing them traffic. This helps you identify gaps and potential angles to target untapped audiences.

Find Long-Tail Keywords
Instead of going after broad terms like “roof repair,” focus on specific queries like “emergency metal roof repair Sydney.” Long-tail keywords capture more qualified, ready-to-convert users with less competition.

Focus on Search Intent
Understand whether a keyword is informational, navigational, or transactional. Align your content to match the user’s purpose—whether they’re researching or ready to buy.

Cluster Keywords Around Core Topics
Group related keywords into content clusters. For example, a core page on "Bathroom Renovations" can have supporting blogs on costs, timelines, and materials—helping you rank for a wider set of related searches.

Target Local and Niche Keywords
Incorporate geo-specific terms like “tree lopping Hurstville” or niche service phrases like “eco-friendly roof cleaning.” This attracts a highly targeted audience in your service area.

Monitor Trends and Seasonal Searches
Use Google Trends to find when certain keywords spike (e.g., “air conditioning repair” in summer). Creating timely content helps you capture audience interest when it’s hottest.

Update and Expand Regularly
Keyword trends change. Regularly audit your keyword list, refresh existing content, and expand into new terms your audience is searching. This keeps your SEO strategy fresh and future-proof.
