Most of searches today rely on AI, entities, topical authority and user signals. How will traditional link building be important in 20226, those that reinforce a brand’s relevance and credibility within a topic, rather than simply passing authority?

AI is over blown. Yeah, automated answers in the search engines will be there but not the amount they are to choke down our throats. The bubble will burst one way or another.

Such a hard question to answer, but I believe AI and search will continue to rely on similar methods to assess credibility. The fact that we have a new technology and behavior for search doesn't change the need and challenge around authenticity and trust. Which is why link building will continue to be an important tactic - however, the weightings may change.

I still prefer guest posting on quality sites as it can get you quality backlinks. Also Ai often quotes sites like Reddit a lot. Something to keep in mind

I think link building will remain important, but the focus should be on relevance and trust rather than just the number of backlinks. A genuine mention from a respected website in your niche can help build brand authority and bring relevant traffic. Guest posting can still work when it provides real value to readers, while low-quality links created only for SEO are becoming less useful. AI may change how search engines discover and evaluate sources, but credibility and useful content will always matter.

One thing I'd add to the relevance and trust points above: start tracking which sources AI answers actually cite for your core topics. Run your main questions through a few AI tools every month and note the domains that keep appearing. Those are your real link targets now, because a mention there tends to show up both in classic rankings and in generated answers.
I'd also stop treating unlinked brand mentions as wasted. Consistent mentions of your brand next to the same topic terms help search engines connect you to that entity, even without a hyperlink. When you do earn a link, make the surrounding paragraph describe what you actually do in plain words, since that context seems to matter more than the anchor text.
Finally, refresh the pages that already earned links. Updated stats and examples keep them cited instead of slowly replaced by newer sources.
