Buying EMD's and linking back from them

I have seen that many of my competitors are doing it. They are getting EMD's and linking back to their main site. So, my query here is if I do it will it help me too?

Just blasting away links won't help you get ranked.

The authority has to rise from some point. The EMD's must have some good links in their link profile otherwise its pretty much useless.

As a matter of fact I have some EMD's that I can buy. They are not much pricey.
