What is the type of link that you are getting? You will get referral traffic for sure but getting ranked in the SERP's its a totally different story.

As "hema29" said just let us know which type of link you are getting and on that basis you would come to know that either it will help in ranking or not.

Like the news sites or sports site. Not necessarily a do-follow link.

Well in that case when it will get featured you will receive a huge inflow of traffic then it will fade away with time. It has no effect on the SERP's though.

If you get the link from the popular website and if it is a do-follow link with high domain authority,then your website will rank well in serp

You get the do-follow link alright but about DA you are totally wrong.
DA is a metrics of Moz what does it have to do with Google or any other search engines SERP's??

Its an imaginary metrics from Moz. Why would Google care about it?
