Is social bookmarking for links a waste of time? Do people earn links, seriously?

For link?!! Yeah, you can say that they are useless. Nobody gives away a do-follow links for free. If you are extremely lucky then you may get some no-follow and out of it some referral traffic. But that's it.

Exactly I was going to say. Yes nobody gives away a do-follow links for free.

And to OP I say if you want exposure then go ahead and knock yourself out. But for links its pretty much useless. Even worse you can wound up getting a ton of spam instead.

Do people earn links, yes. But most of the links which you will get will be no-follow or totally useless ones. Getting links that matter, well that's complete different scenario and one out of billion possibility. So, do the math.

No that's wrong, If you use high quality social bookmarking sites, such as Reddit, Delicious, Diggo, or Pinterest, then you can get some good links, good traffic, and some trusted readers from it.

Maybe some no-follow links but not do-follow ones.
