Say, if an article gets published in CNN or BBC. Then what will probably happen, SEO and traffic wise?

So, assuming the article is in first page. Yeah, it will get traffic and in a good amount. But as soon as it falls from the first page, traffic will also fall. And if during the stay on the first page if the site article gets some external (strong) links then traffic might stay for a while but that's it.
