It is really very nice topic to discuss here.
When it comes to understanding consumer minds a marketer can use various techniques to do that.
1. Connecting through the social media to the consumers directly. Asking them what they need, analyzing their views and following up their product behavioral elements.
2. Conducting various Online and Offline surveys to get their reviews and what their future expectations on that particular product.
3. Myriad number of sales are also triggered due to various demo-graphical and seasonal occasions (like New Year, Christmas). So marketers must focus on those needs also.
4. Focusing on the upcoming trends and consumers minds evolution towards any particular product can also help to understand their minds.

Try to study your consumers more exclusively. Divide them according to age, demographics, social life, status etc and track each group individually. Represent your product according to their needs, fears, expectations; such as a school girl of 2nd grade may be attracted to toys but a teenage girl will be not.

It is a critical issue. I personally prefer face to face interviews/ conversations and performing online surveys.
