Last week I was asked that how one blogger earn links through blog commenting. Here is a simple solution and simple answer from me.
Blog commenting isn't something you do which you have to do. Do it casually. Offer some additional value in your comment that can be resource to the concerned page.
Blogs sprang up and real content took over. You had to interact with your peers (genuine interaction at that) instead of mindlessly linking.

You are correct, people try to build links through it and ended up spamming the blog.

People often spam through comments in order to get links.

Blog comments generate nofollow backlinks which are never crawled by search engines. But these links play an important role to redirect traffic to your website from various external webpages.
