My question is simple does these link typed help in anyway? Or, they only make the job of search engines a lot easier.
The word help here is a relative term. It solely depends on what you are expecting to get from them.
They help in the ranking the very least. But if you are expecting traffic then yeah they can get you traffic in high numbers as well.
For traffic go for it. Otherwise, don't bother.

yes, they helps . Although they are not as powerful as they were earlier but you can still count on them. I have many nofollow ugc and sponsored links pointing to my domain and is ranking on top 5 position for the keyword
