Popular site who lets people to create an account or add the individuals information where you can add a link.

Those sites may not help you rank in the SERP's because they provide no-follow links but does they help you in anyway? Can get you plain old referral traffic, right?
Some can drive referral traffic and some can't. You answered you own query here. If they don't drive traffic or get you ranked, then what else is there to achieve?

Some would suggest brand awareness. But I don't agree to them.

You put links in a natural way if they get some exposure then its good for them. Thinking of brand awareness and then putting links will definitely end up spamming the host site.

Even if those links are no-follow but backlink from the popular site is worth. The link may drive good amount of traffic.
