Here's what we did in our site. We build a two tier content system.
The first one is about the niche. In those articles we seriously talked about the problems and general talkative information of the niche. What people like and dislike. What are their problems that they face in a day to day basis, those stuff. They covered most of the articles of the entire site.
Now, the second one is about the products which we are actually promoting. These articles are the least in amount but they are put strategically in between the first tier content. Suppose, in some article say that we are talking about the problems of wired internet connection. So, in that article we put a link to the product review of a page of our wifi router which we are selling.

Always it doesn't have to be a separate article. Products can be promoted through general articles too. And they look more authenticate that way.

It just have to look like that you genuinely referring the product.

If you just create an article only to promote one product then it will definitely look suspicious. So, keep the promotion mixed and within different layers of content.
