Does Google Adwords effects ranking at all? I have seen that people often say that Google shows those who pays them in the first.
Even if they do show Adwords ads in the SERP's they are named as 'Ads by Google'. So, in my opinion Google Adwords doesn't effect SERP's at all.
No they does not effect the rankings at all.
Actually, I am quite sure it does. A friend of mine and I share a blog and we just cut the adsense from it and the exact same thing happened. No change in PR, different host account, and same drop in ratings. Apparently the drop is more centered around the main keywords. Not as much around long tail. This further goes to show that adwords does play some roll in Google's search algorithm. Try it yourself.
Paid listing has nothing to do about to the organic listing. The reason why it shows it the top of Google Listing is just because they prioritize the one who got paid for their services, and that's the featured in Google listing named "'Ads by Google'".
As per as officially(google) adwords don't help in SEO, Adwords is a marketing tools working on PPC(Pay Per Click) model that helps you to generate leads from targeted keywords and location.

Adwords is the principle source of income for Google Inc. if all company using Adwords come with good seo rank or showing on first page, then why will they expend their money in Adwords.
