Asking for links is always a good option. But they are not going to give you a link unless you have some extraordinary to offer. Suppose, the hosting site is referring to another site for any topic and you site is providing that data better then the second site then the hosting site may be interested in giving you the link, otherwise not.

Links are like blood of a website and any link is good and if you get it by asking then why not?
