An HTML Sitemap is a page on your website with links to every single page of important content on your website. Any pages on your site that can be indexed by search or are navigable from your menus should be linked to by your sitemap page!

A sitemap file is a file listing URLs of the site you want to crawl (and thus index). Once the engines have viewed the file, if all goes well they will explore (crawl) the URLs listed. And so if everything is (still) good, they should index the famous URLs.
