Can you rank without building links?

I am confused how it's possible to rank a keywords without building backlinks. If this can be done in any other ways then of course social media is most important.

Yes, It is possible. If you have a unique and quality content then it can be possible. To maintain all, you have to create back links for traffic and brand awareness in market.

I think you should push more content on Social example on Facebook, Twitter, G+, Instagram,...With this way, you still don't need the backlinks, however if your contents are high quality enough, many people will share them for you, then your website will get a lot of traffic and also brand awareness.
