How many backlinks can one earn from a website?

How many backlinks can one earn from a website? Is every credible anchor text that directs to our own website from any website considered as a backlink?

I am confused as to what is called as a backlink? Is it just each submission that we do? Or is it that only the few good anchor texts or hyperlinks are considered as a backlink? Or is it one website-one backlink kind of thing? And if it we get one backlink per website- then why do we do every day offpage submissions?

One link from any site to your site will be called as backlink.

There is no rule that how many backlinks can you score from a site. But if you are building backlinks for yourself or say buying them then its preferred that you get only one link from one domain.

Anchor text or not. Even though naked urls can be considered as backlinks if they link back to your site.

Google only counts one link from a root domain. Therefore only a single link will be counted from a single domain.

Its not necessary that the link has to be from root domain. It can come from elsewhere too.
