Can free Apps make money?

Well certainly they can make money. I am assuming that you have played one or two mobile games right? Then you know when pass up the games first one or two steps there comes up auto apps which say to buy or install other games or apps. If you buy or download another thing then the game owner earns money through commission or just direct sale.
