Let say designing a website relates to two things:
1) Site structure and navigation: this affects quite a lot in SEO since it determines the where the bot can crawl and what particular category, tag, and pages we want to index.
2) Audience matter: for most of the time audiences don't want to click too much times just to get to the link they want to see. Therefore, audiences don't like a site which has a complicated structure (too many categories, layers, etc...) and high chance they will abandon the site just because they don't know where to look at or search for. Appearance is also a matter since too complicated sites (for example there are so many pictures, videos for site to load) make it load extremely slow and audiences don't want to wait for too long just to see a site fully loaded.
