I want to avoid link penalty from penguin updates. Tel me your suggestion.

Any kind of link which is not relevant to your site may hurt you. Links not from your niche or related niches can cost you to penalty. Find out those links by using your webmasters tools account and after identifying them just remove them through the disavow tool of webmasters tool.
