Twitter’s goal was to provide a means to tag posts thematically and thus make it easier to find relevant content. From there, they quickly spread to other social networks. Besides helping categorize content and make it more discoverable, you can now also use them to start a conversation around your brand, inject posts with humor or tap into trends.
