That is a complete non-sense statement. If it were effect then sites like Amazon and Wikipedia will be doomed.

E-commerce sites do have tons of URLs. that doesn't mean that it will hurt the SERPs.
it is a myth. but if On page is not proper than it can hurt your SERPs.
