Important or not. Yes immensely. Proper alt tags can get your image ranked well it will bring more additional traffic

I think that they are pretty important. I have seen a site which doesn't get ranked for its content but it get ranked for its images.

Alt tags is somehow important because this tag tells the search engine what this image or picture is all about and indexed then provided to the target users query.

Alt tags for images define the image description for search engine to know about your webpage image. This is because search engines cannot read images directly and hence alt tags help to define the images.
